AVESNES

Département: Pas-de-Calais

Blason de Avesnes/Arms (crest) of Avesnes
Official blazon
French Coupé: au 1er de gueules à l'aigle d'or, au 2e parti au I d'or au lion de gueules et au II d'or au taureau contourné de gueules.
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms were proposed in 1996 and I have no information whether these arms were actually adopted by the municipality.

In 1887 it was mentioned that the church in Avesnes possessed a beautiful 13th century cross used for processions. A few years later the cross was sold for 150 francs. On the three upper arms of the cross there were symbols of St. John (eagle), St. Luke (bull) and St. Mark (lion). The arms thus show these three animals in the colours of the Monchy family, historical Lords of Avesnes.
