Origin/meaning

The town was granted some privileges on December 21, 1454 by Count Johann IV of Brandenburg-Kulmbach. The arms were granted at the same time. The arms have not changed ever since, except between 1819 and the beginning of the 20th century, when the black quarters had to be blue (Bavarian colours).

The quartered field is the arms of the Hohenzollern family, later the arms of the Brandenburg dynasty. The savage may be a symbol for the rough nature in the surroundings.
