Origin/meaning
The arms are canting (Eimer=Emmer=bucket) and have been used since the 14th century. Emmerich got city rights in 1233 from Count Otto of Geldern; the colours are the colours of Kleve.
In the early 20th century the arms below were shown in the Kaffee Hag albums. These arms show the arms based on the great seal of the city, with the city walls and two small shields with the bucket.
