Merles (or '''Merlettes''') are typical for continental European heraldry and are small duck-like birds without beak or feet. The word merle also means blackbird in French, hence in France they are more often named merlette (lit. small blackbird).

Merles (or Merlettes) are typical for continental European heraldry and are small duck-like birds without beak or feet. The word merle also means blackbird in French, hence in France they are more often named merlette (lit. small blackbird).

Not to be confused with the English Martlets.
