Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on July 5, 1976.

The waves and hind suggest the name Hyndburn, the river from which the borough is named.

The crest represents characteristic local industries, Accrington Brick manfacture (masoned crown), calico printing (the stag from the arms of the Hargreaves Family of Broad Oak) and cotton (the wheel of the 'Spinning Jenny' of James Hargreaves of Oswaldtwistle).

The Supporters represent the historical and manorial history of the constituent areas. The purple lion of the de Lacy Lords of Blackburnshire (Accrington, Clayton-le-Moors, Church, Great Harwood and Altham) and the white lion of the Peel family (Oswaldtwistle), also seen in the device of Rishton for the de Rishtons. The lions are differenced with collars bearing the river motif from the shield and brandish staves entwined with red roses, each having seven petals representing a seven Lancashire councils combined.

The Motto is By Industry and Prudence, a variation of the former Accrington motto echoing that of the Hargreaves and Peel families.
