The lion most likely is the lion of Habsburg, as this family ruled the city at the time. The oldest coloured image dates from 1483. Origin/meaning
Saulgau was already a city in the 13th century. The oldest seal is known since 1273 and already shows a shield with the lion and a canting pillar (Säule).
