OBERWENINGEN

Canton : Zürich

Wappen von Oberweningen/Arms (crest) of Oberweningen

Official blazon

In Gold ein Mohrenkopf mit roten Lippen

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially adopted on November 18, 1928.

Even though the arms were officially adopted in 1928, they appear already earlier. The oldest reference of the Moor's head dates from 1860, when it is shown on a flourbag from the municipal mill. The arms also appear at the same time on a lantern of the local fire brigade. In 1890 it was shown in colour in a glass-stained window in the local church.

The meaning of the head is not known. It has been speculated that the arms are taken from the arms of the Knights of Mandach, who had large possessions in the area in late medieval times (see also Mandach). Another explanation is that the arms are canting for the Moor family, an influential local family in the 19th century.
