Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted in 1885, but were first used around 1581. The arms show the cross of the arms of the bishops of Verden, who granted the village the several rights in 1450. The city rights were granted in 1938. The plate in the middle of the arms is the symbol if St. John, the patron saint of the local church, which is first mentioned in 1258. The arms were first used by Bishop Eberhard von Holle in 1581.

In a seal dating from the 18th century the arms are shown with a helmet and crest. The crest is a man holding in his hand the banner of the bishops of Verden. These additions were not included in the grant of 1885.
