Ellwangen was already mentioned as a city in 1200 and was the capital of a large territory owned by the local Abbey. From the 14th until the late 18th century the local seals show a mitre, symbol for the Abbey. From 1802, when the worldy possessions of the Abbey became part of Württemberg, the present arms have been used. Origin/meaning
The arms appear already in late medieval times as the proposed arms for Erlolf van Langres, the founder of the Abbey in 764.
