Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The arms are based on the arms of a Whealon family from Ireland to symbolise the last name of the Archbishop. The bend with lozenges and the chief with the two fleur-de-lys are taken from the arms of that family. The middle fleur-de-lys in the Whealon arms has been replaced by a crown. This represents the country of birth of the mother of the bishop, Sweden.
The two additional scallops are the symbol of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of the bishop. They are red, for the martyrdom of the saint.
The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop.
The motto repeats the words of St. Jpohn the Baptist (John 1:23).
