Origin/meaning
The village is named after the Münch family from Basel, who built the local castle in the 14th century and named themselves afterwards Münch von Münchenstein. In 1515 they sold the territory to the city of Basel.
The arms show a canting monk (Mönch/Münch), taken from the medieval arms of the family.
