The helmet is odd, as it seems to have the shape of a sola topi or pith helmet, a type of headgear worn by much of the Union Defence Force before and during the Second World War. However it is fitted with wings in the tradition of the theatrical Viking helmet (an invention of the Wagnerian opera tradition, rather than having any basis in the actual helmets worn by real-life Vikings). VALHALLA PRIMARY SCHOOL
Country: South Africa
Campus/location : Valhalla, Pretoria, Gauteng
Afrikaans | blazon wanted |
English | blazon wanted |
Origin/meaning
The arms are not officially granted.
The arms are on a cartouche, rather than a shield based on an air force unit badge. Valhalla lies along the western side of Swartkops Air Base and has been home to many families involved with the air force or otherwise with the military generally
The allusion to Vikings arises out of the fact that the township of Valhalla is named for the warriors’ heaven of Norse legend.
