The arms were officially granted on October 12, 1954.

The crest has reference to Ackworth School and Archbishop Holgate's Hospital. The silver crescent and gold stars on the blue circlet are from the arms of the Governors of the Foundling Hospital, whose buildings became the school; the bull's head is from the arms of Archbishop Holgate.
The motto is part of that of the Warde-Aldam family of Frickley and Hooton Pagnell.
