Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on May 13, 2005.
Velez was conquered from the Moors in 1487 and received city rights and a coat of arms in September 1499, by Queen Isabella of Castille.
The arms show King Ferdinand, husband of Isabella, as a mounted knight killing a Moorish soldier, who, according to legend had killed the aide-de-camp of the King, Sebastián Sánchez, who, in turn had saved the King's life during the fight for the city.
