Origin/meaning
The wavy bar is likely derived from the arms of the Massow dynasty. Rummelsburg was first mentioned in 1506 as a possession of the Massow family. The arms of the family are two wavy bars. The oldest known seal of the city dates from the 16th century and shows a letter M and two wavy bars. Another 16th century seal also shows the M, but with a single bar.
In the 18th century the city used the Prussian eagle in its seals, only in the 19th century the arms with the bar appear.
In the 1990s the town changed the arms with the bar to the current arms. These were officially granted in 1932 to the then Rummelsburg District of Prussia. They also show the red wavy bar, but with the Pommeranian griffin holding a scythe (as a symbol for agriculture). The district was abolished in 1945.
