Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on August 10, 1976.
The inverted V shape of the arms is derived from the chevron in the arms of the d'Abernon family, taken from the arms of the former Esher council. The main colours are taken from the arms of the Warenne family, for a long time Earls of Surrey. The two oak branches are taken from the arms of Surrey and represent the two former councils. The bridge and elm in the golden part of the shield are canting. The bridge has two arches, symbolising the union of the two former councils. The four waves represent the Thames, Mole, Wey and Ember rivers.
The crown on the crest is an old Saxon crown, recalling the Saxon Hundred of Elmbridge, whose Moot was held at the bridge over the Mole. The mound represents Esher Common, on which stands the griffin taken from the Esher arms. He holds a forked pennon showing a nine pointed star for the nine parishes in the borough.
The supporters are a combination of the eagles from the arms of Esher (white) and Walton and Weybridge (red). Both eagles stand on a branch of elm. Both hold a rose of Tudor in their beaks, taken from the Walton and Weybridge arms. The rose signifies the strong ties between the Tudor dynasty and the area.
The motto can be translated as 'Till the rivers cease to flow'.
