HALLAND
Swedish |
I blått fält ett upprest lejon av silver med röd beväring, därest dylik skall komma till användning. |
English | blazon wanted |
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted in 1944.
Halland was transferred from Denmark to Sweden at the Peace of Roskilde in 1658. The arms appear first at Karl X Gustavs funeral in 1660. The red nails and tongue were added in 1944.
There are different opinions on the origin of the arms. Three theories exist. It may be derived from Karl X Gustavs own arms, which included three lions, it may be a variant of the so-called Göta lion (see Göteborg), but it can also come from the arms of Bengt Algotsson, Duke of Halland in the 14th century.
