Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on April 16, 1982.
Sør-Varanger is Norway's most Eastern municipality, bordering Russia. The division of the shield symbolises the importance of the number three :
The three main sources of income are agriculture, mining and fishing; the municipality borders Russia and Finland; there are three cultures in the municipality : Norwegian, Finnish and Samian.
