Origin/meaning

Dassel belonged to the Counts of Dassel until 1310, when the city was acquired by the Bishops of Hildesheim. In 1315 Dassel received city rights form Bishop Heinrich von Wohldenberg. At the end of the 14th century a seal was made, showing St. Lawrence, the patron saint of the city.

In 1523 the city became a possession of the Dukes of Braunschweig, and a new seal appeared in the early 17th century. Instead of St. Lawrence it showed the antler and balls taken from the arms of the original Counts of Dassel. The arms have not changed since.
