Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on March 30, 2000.
The tower symbolises the fortresses and towers in the area that protected the region. The small shield on the tower shows the arms of the Barreto family, Lords of Quarteira.
The sugarcane refers to the former sugar plantations in the region. The anchor refers to the importance of fishing and sailing, as wella s to the modern marina in the town. The two dolphins also are an indication of the importance of fishing in historical times.
The base shows a coin dating from around 500 BC, which was found in the area and it symbolises the long history of Quarteira. The waves symbolise the ocean.
