The upper part shows the lion of the Dukes of [[Jülich]], who ruled the area from 1177-17<sup>th</sup> century. The origin of the lower lion is unknown. The arms are based on a seal dating from 1556. Older seals show a castle with in front of the gate the arms of Jülich.
