The oldest seals of Saarburg date from the 14<sup>th</sup> century and already show a castle or fortress with a small shield with a cross. The castle indicates the importance of the city as one of the main fortresses of the [[Trier (State)|State of Trier]] from 1059-1794. Saarburg received city rights in 1291. | |||
The small shield shows the arms of the State of Trier. The base of the arms shows some waves, symbolising the Saar river. | |||

Origin/meaning
The oldest seals of Saarburg date from the 14th century and already show a castle or fortress with a small shield with a cross. The castle indicates the importance of the city as one of the main fortresses of the State of Trier from 1059-1794. Saarburg received city rights in 1291.
