Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on February 12, 1908 and again on November 18, 1971.
The arms combine the symbols of the Counts of Schwalenberg-Pyrmont (cross) and the State of Köln (key). The city historically was a possession of the Counts of Schwalenberg-Pyrmont, and was later jointly ruled and finally acquired by the Archbishops of Köln.
The new arms are basically similar in design as the old arms, except that the colours were changed and the rose of Lippe was added.
