Origin/meaning
Hals received city rights in 1376, but the village did not develop into a real city. In 1517 the town became part of Bayern, and it received again town rights and arms in 1583.
The arms are nearly identical to the present arms. The lion's head is likely a canting element (Hals means neck) and the lion as well as the diamonds in the lower half are derived from the arms of the Wittelsbach family, Dukes of Bayern. The bar was added in the 19th century and probably symbolises the Ilz river. Originally the bar was wavy, but in the early 20th century was replaced by the present bar.
