Tübingen was founded in the late 12<sup>th</sup> century by the Counts-Palatine of Tübingen. The family used the banner (gonfanon) in its arms and the city adopted the banner as its arms already in the early 13<sup>th</sup> century. Even after the city was acquired by Württemberg in 1342 the arms did not change.
