Additions: 1972 Brè-Aldesago, Castagnola; 2004 Breganzona, Cureggia, Davesco-Soragno, Gandria, Pambio-Noranco, Pazzallo, Pregassona, Viganello; 2013 Bogno, Cadro, Carona, Certara, Cimadera, Sonvico, Valcolla
Official blazon
Origin/meaning
The arms show the letters LUGA and are simply the short name of the city. In time many (bizarre) explanations have been given for the letters, but without any historical evidence. The name "Lugano" derives from the Latin and means "holy wood" or forest in general.
The colors are documented by a scroll dated 1588 visible in Altdorf's museum.

The arms on a Dutch tobacco card (+/- 1910) |
On the front of the city hall of Lugano the designer, architect Moraglia, included in the decorations the city arms on the arms of Canton Ticono, see below. Sometimes these arms are mistaken from the city arms as such.
