Origin/meaning

Kenzingen was made a city in 1249 by the Lords of Üsenberg. In 1354, after the Üsenberg family became extinct, the town became part of Austria. The earliest seal, dating from 1280, shows only St. Peter and two keys, the patron saint and his symbols.

Later seals show a city with walls and two towers, with the arms of Üsenberg (the wing) placed between the towers. In 1692 the two fish were added to the arms; these represent the importance of fishing in the Elz and Rhein rivers in historical times.

The Austrian arms were added in 1742.

In 1898 the present arms were granted and re-granted in 1960. (Compare also Endingen and Herbolzheim)

The seals of the city:

The arms by Hupp in the Kaffee Hag albums +/- 1925

Literature: Stadler, 1964-1971, 8 volumes.
