Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on February 28, 1978.

The arms are made up from elements of the former councils that merged to Maldon DC. The lion represents the former 'Borough of Maldon' and its Royal Charter Arms which contains the three Plantagenet Lions of Henry II. The corn represents the former 'Maldon Rural District' and its strong farming traditions. The wheel represents the former Urban District of Burnham-on-Crouch and its main activity of sailing for which it has a national reputation.

The barge on the crest symbolises the traditional East Coast sailing barge, a symbol of trading on the River Blackwater in earlier days. The fleur de lys shown on the crest are taken from the arms of Henry II who granted Maldon's first Royal Charter in 1171. The warrior supporter represents the strong Saxon heritage and the Battle of Maldon. The sailor symbolises the maritime heritage and fine sailing havens on the Blackwater and Crouch rivers.
