Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on October 17, 1935.

The arms are based on the arms of the Counts of the Mark, with in the upper half a deer as a canting element (Her is derived from Hirsch, or deer). The deer also refers to a local legend in which the people from Herscheid and Valbert saved the life of the Count of the Mark and received free hunting rights around their villages.
