The arms are a combination of the two lions of the arms of the Hohenlohe dynasty and the wheel of the [[Mainz (State)|State of Mainz]]. Most of the district was ruled for some time by the Hohenlohe family, but some parts were a possession of the bishops of Mainz. The wheel already appeared in the arms of the district Künzelsau, the lions in Öhringen.
