The arms are taken from the Monastery of Kempten, which owned the major part of the area until 1802. The monastery used these arms since the 15<sup>th</sup> century. The division of the shield in red and blue is known since the early 14<sup>th</sup> century. The bust is the bust of Holy Queen Hildegard, who allegedly founded the monastery. The bust was also used by the city of [[Kempten]] on seals in the 14<sup>th</sup> century.
