Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on March 18, 1886.

The arms, which are said to have been based on the design of a medal brought home by the sailor, are an example of canting heraldry: the ships representing the port (Porto) and the cannons, war (Bello).

The castle in the crest is thought to stand for one of the castles by which Puerto Bello was defended, and the Latin motto "With help and counsel" to the skillful manner in which Admiral Vernon and his colleagues captured it.
