PORTOBELLO
Burgh
Incorporated into : 1896 Edinburgh city (1975 Edinburgh District Council (1996 Edinburgh City))
Official blazon
Quarterly: 1st and 4th, Azure, a three-masted vessel under sail •or; 2nd and 3rd, Argent, a cannon mounted on a carriage Sable.
Above the Shield is placed a suitable Helmet with a Mantling Gules doubled Argent, and on a Wreath of the proper Liveries is set for Crest a tower Argent masoned Sable, and in an Escrol over the same this Motto "Ope Et Consilio".
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on March 18, 1886.
The arms, which are said to have been based on the design of a medal brought home by the sailor, are an example of canting heraldry: the ships representing the port (Porto) and the cannons, war (Bello).
The castle in the crest is thought to stand for one of the castles by which Puerto Bello was defended, and the Latin motto "With help and counsel" to the skillful manner in which Admiral Vernon and his colleagues captured it.
