In goud een adelaar met neerwaarts gerichte vlucht van keel.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on May 12, 1992.

The meaning of the eagle is not known, but is very likely the symbol of St. John the Evangelist, but without the nimbus. The eagle is taken from the seal of the Kemexhe estate, to which Herstappe historically was associated, even though it was a separate estate. Both estates were a possession of the Chapter of St. John in Liège and ruled as a combined estate. The seal with the eagle is known from 1505 until 1631.

The colours were determined in 1992 and are the colours of the city and State of Liège.
