The arms symbolise the four former municipalities.
The first quarter refers to Kortenaken and shows the arms of the Van Hulsberg(-Schaloen) family, Lords of Kortenaken since 1655. The arms appear on the seals of Kortenaken from 1696 and 1698.
The second quarter refers to Waanrode and Miskom. and shows the old arms of Waanrode.
The third quarter refers to Kersbeek and is based on the local seal from 1660. It shows the arms of the Van Houthem family, one of the most important families in the village at the time.
The fourth quarter refers to Hoeleden and is based on the local seals from 1441, 1592 and 1703. All show the arms of the Lords of Diest, who acquired the estate of Hoeleden in 1399.
