GRAFENAU (GRA)

State : Bayern
Incorporated into : 1973 Freyung-Grafenau

Grafenau.kreis.jpg

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on January 24, 1957.

The lower part is taken from the arms of the Counts of Formbach, who gave their name to the district (Graf=count). They ruled the area from 950-1158 and their arms are known from a grave in the monastery of Formbach. The chief shows the arms of the Wittelsbach dynasty, Dukes of Bayern, who acquired the area slowly since the 13th century.
