The previous arms were granted on September 25, 1947.

The lion in the arms is derived from the arms of the St. Bavo Abbey in Gent. The village of Lochristi was a possession of the abbey for many centuries (see also Oostakker, Sint Amandsberg and Sint Lievens Houtem.

St. Nicholas is the patron saint of Lochristi.
