- (de) In Gold ein von drei blau bedachten Türmen überhöhter stilisierter roter Torbau, in dessen Bogen ein rot bewehrter schwarzer Löwe steht.
Origin/meaning
The oldest known seal of the city dates from the late 14th century, but is known since 1430. It shows the lion of the Counts of Meissen, who owned the city at the time, under a typical gothic gate. All later seals and images have shown the same basic composition. The size and shape of the gate has differed very widely during the centuries, as did the colours. In the late 16th century the colours were all black and silver, those of the Hohenzollern family, who ruled the city at the time. The above image has been in use since the late 19th century and is directly based on the oldest seal.
