Origin/meaning

Arzberg received city rights in 1408 and the oldest known seal of the city dates from 1423. The seal showed, as did the second seal from 1516, a shield with a chequered bordure, and in the center a lion mining a mountain. The bordure and the lion are derived from the arms of the Margraves of Nürnberg, who owned the city at the time. The mountain in the Erzberg (ore-mountain) and thus a canting element. In the 17th century the bordure was removed from the seal. The colours of the lion and the shield also have changed often during the centuries.

The above left arms were used from the early 19th century until 1968, and show the arms in the colours and composition as usual since the late 18th century. The above right arms were granted on October 15, 1968, and show the historical colours and composition.
