Segeberg received city rights in 1244. The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city, known since 1351. The tower symbolises the local castle, built in 1133, standing on a canting mountain (Berg). The city was a possession of the Counts of Holstein, and the banners, small shield and the helmet are all derived from the arms of these counts.
