Origin/meaning

The dexter impalement bears the arms of The Catholic University of America. The sinister impalement contains the personal arms of the Bishop. It is based on that of a McCormick family of Ireland. The saw-like indentations of the fess honor Saint Joseph the Carpenter, and a further reference to the Foster Father of Our Saviour is incorporated in the two lilies. A brisure of a shamrock has been added as a symbol of Saint Patrick. The two Saints are the patrons of Bishop McCormick.

The motto Sub tuum praesidium is taken from the antiphon Nunc Dimittis in Compline of the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin.
