Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on November 19, 1943.
The arms show a tar barrel with flames. This refers to the tar making for ships, and the importance of shipping and sailing for the city.
The composition first appeared on a seal from 1620. In the mid 19th century B. Kene proposed to change the barrel into a tar oven and asan augmentation of the arms two anchors and the provincial arms in the upper right corner. These were never adopted.
