Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on May 7, 1976.

Neustadt was already mentioned as a city in the early 13th century and became a possession of Otto Duke of Lüneburg in 1302. The oldest seal dates from the same time and shows a city with the lion of the Welfen dynasty, to which the Dukes of Lüneburg belonged. In addition to the lion the local patron saint, St. Mary appeared on the seals. The above simplified composition with lion and gate appeared in the 16th century. Ever since the composition has not changed, but the size and shape of the gate and lion has changed considerably during the centuries.
