Origin/meaning

The cross represents the one that was erected in Tres Cruces, when the first visit of John Paul II to Uruguay (1987), and that remained in that historic place, not without being, like Christ, "sign of contradiction". The cross is located in one of the points of arrival in the city, and seems to pose the question of faith to everyone who passes by: "Who do you say I am?".

The Cerro de Montevideo,is taken from the arms of Montevideo and has been present in the episcopal shields of several Bishops and Archbishops of our Church in Montevideo. Crowned by the fort with its lighthouse, it receives visitors who arrive at the port of Montevideo. It speaks to us of strength, of welcome, of light that warns to avoid dangers.

The star symbolizes the Virgin, star of the sea that guides navigators. To Mary "life, sweetness and hope of ours" has entrusted the new Archbishop with his life and his ministry: "All yours, Mary". She is the Auxiliadora of the Christians, the Immaculate Virgin of the Thirty Three, "Star of the dawn" of the nascent homeland, that continues accompanying the march of our town.

The hornero (Furnarios sp), who builds his mud nest, is typical of our land, and appears as an image of the family, of the community that is built every day. The countryman says that the baker does not work on Sunday, respecting the Lord's Day. In the "Horneros" group, during the high school years, the new Archbishop discovered the life of faith as a life of service, especially for the poorest. In turn, the solid home of the baker who provides shelter and freshness, evokes the home. To the beautiful family experience lived by the Archbishop
