PRINCIPALITY OF WALDECK

Arms (crest) of Principality of Waldeck
Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The County Waldeck was a county located in the present-day German state of Hessen. It existed as an independent territory from the 12th century until 1848 (from 1712 Principality), when it was merged with the County Pyrmont to the Principality of Waldeck-Pyrmont. Capital was the city of Waldeck.

The arms show a black 8-pointed cross, derived from the arms of the medieval Counts of Waldeck (1137-1397), has been used to indicate the territory ever since.
