Origin/meaning
The wheel in the upper part is the symbol of the State of Mainz, to which the town belonged from the 8th century until 1803. The oldest known seal dates from 1820 and shows the castle with the wheel. It is likely that it is based on older seals, but no proof thereof exists. The castle (Burg) is also a canting element.
