The city developed around a castle of the Dukes of Pommern and was mentioned as a city in 1245. The arms are based on the oldest seals of the city and show the castle with the griffin of [[Pommern]] (Pommerania). In Silber auf grünem Boden, in dem sich drei silberne Bäche vor einer schwarzen Toröffnung vereinen, eine rote Burg mit einem breiten gezinnten und spitzbedachten Torgebäude, zwei gezinnten und spitzbedachten Rundtürmen mit je zwei schwarzen Spitzbogenfenstern übereinander, die Dächer besteckt mit goldenen Wetterfahnen; das Dach des Torgebäudes erklimmt links ein gold bewehrter roter Greif mit untergeschlagenem Schweif.
