Origin/meaning

The arms were officially adopted in 1960, but the lion already has been used on the arms of the city since 1374.

The lion is the lion of the Counts of Meissen, who acquired the city and surrounding territory 1374. The oldest seal shows the lion and the letter E for the city, since 1650 the lion holds a small tree. The tree probably was chosen as a symbol for the rebuilding of the city after the 30-years war. Later the E was restored and used in the arms until the 1950s. In 1960 the arms of 1650 were again adopted.

Hupp showed in the 1920s the arms with the lion of Thüringen, as the city became a possession of Balthasar von Thüringen in 1347, see below.
