Origin/meaning
Zierenberg was founded between 1290 and 1294. The oldest known seal dates from 1304 and shows a female deer, the present arms are derived from this seal. The name at the time was Tyrberg, so the deer could be a canting symbol (Tyr/Tier (animal)). In the seal the deer stands on a small mountain (Berg), making the whole picture canting. Later seals only show the deer, not the mountain. Since 1450 the image is also seen on the arms of the city. In later years the animal stood on a flat bottom, which was removed after the 16th century.
