Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on August 10, 1836.

The arms show the head of St. John Baptist on a platter, St. John is the local patron saint. The shield already appeared on the oldest known seal of the town, dating from 1374. All later seals and images show the same composition. The colours are known since 1562. The size and shape, and sometimes also the colours, however have varied widely during the centuries, but the composition remained the same.
