The arms were officially granted on September 21, 1987.
The chevron resembles a roof of a house, and is a canting element; -heim means house. The three wings are derived from the medieval Knights Von Volzum and based on a seal from Henning de Volksem from 1344. The colours are those of the Braunschweig region.
